We are linking up with Collaboration Cuties for their Mentor Text Linky.  This week the theme is Math.

Currently we are teaching a unit on Fractions, and this book was a great tie-in! In this book the main character has many adventures through the day.  Each part of the story shows that fractions are a part of our everyday lives; from food to summer camp; sports to school; and everything in between.  The illustrations capture the student's attention; they enjoy looking for all the examples of fractions!  This author also wrote the books, My Odd Day and My Even Day which are worth checking into!

After reading My Half Day we have our students complete this Fraction Fun activity.  Students take a basic fraction and turn it into something else; for example,

the rectangle cut in half could be turned into a domino
the circle cut into thirds could be turned into a pizza
the rectangle cut into fourths could be turned into a candy bar
the square cut in half could be turned into a sandwich

Usually the students get very creative.  It's neat to see what they come up with! If you'd like to try this activity with your students, click on the picture below.

Before signing off, we wanted to share that Suzy was our Friday Giveaway winner!  She won our BIG Word Work packet.  Thank you to all of you for participating!

Have a great Sunday!

1. Thank you! Have a great week as well.

6. Thanks for the freebie. This book looks very cool. I wish I still taught fractions, but they are not included in our new math curriculum. I will pin this post for the future though cause I love teaching fractions, especially in real world situations.

Thanks for sharing!
