Catchin' Up! (and a Manic Monday Freebie)

Whew!  We've had a few days off from blogging...we have been working on a new packet we're sharing below, we had some illnesses, and we've had some holiday plans.  Now it is time to catch up with some great linkys!  We're sharing our homework resources and how we organize it to link up with these 2 great linkys!

Our New Homework Booklets

So homework...this is the packet we've been working on!  With the help of Ashley Hughes' cute kiddos, we'll model what we have included in this packet!  Below you can see our booklet.  We like this format because we can stick "extra" stuff in if we have additional work for the week, like word work or leveled readers.
This past year, we had our first experience with standardized testing in 1st Grade.  It was traumatic....for us!!  We only found out about it a week before administration.  There was no time to prep our kiddos.  Luckily the kiddos actually handled it quite well!  This experience gave us good insight into the ways our kiddos must be able to interact with various texts.  We created weekly passages for homework.  The passages have response questions aligned to Common Core Standards.  They also have a fluency piece and some language practice (nonsense words, rhyming, spelling, grammar).  There are three levels of text to meet the needs of many readers: below level, on level and above level.
Next, we created "Mighty Math" worksheets.  These worksheets practice skills from each of the Common Core Math Strands every week!  We wanted kiddos to have continual reinforcement of skill/concepts learned and a preview of skills to come.  We called them "mighty" because kiddos practice small bits of math throughout the year and it makes them "might" smart at the end of the year! :)
The last part of our booklet will be for spelling.  We will put each week's spelling words on this page.  We also have some clever ideas for practicing spelling words at home!  Putting the spelling lists in this booklet will really help with differentiation!

Our Word Work packet included two differentiated spelling lists.  It also has word work activities for the week.  Some of the activities could be sent home for homework.  Click the picture to find it in our TpT store.

Now, for what we've been up to besides creating....

Sarah
SUPER rainy start to the week.  This was how we were spending our time.

Finally enjoying some sunshine after LOTS of rain!

Stella has been sick...she's on the way to getting better.  Even though we get frustrated with her sometimes, we sure wish she was back to her regular self!  We loved seeing her play ball on the patio!

Tamra

This is what we did for the 5 minutes it wasn't raining this week (and when Sarah and I say a lot of rain...we mean rain/storms/flooding!!!).  Taking a break after swim lessons!  :)

Sarah and I LOVE these To-Do lists that you can buy at Target; we've even blogged about them!  One day I discovered my little one had made her own To-Do List (or several to be exact).  I texted this picture to Sarah and said we would have another buddy blogging with us in a few years!

Any guesses on what swept our house this week?  No fun! :(

Thanks for visiting us today! Have a great rest of the weekend!

  5. I don't like standardized at early ages but we all have to cope with it. I think it is great you are helping your children in a child friendly way. The packets look great!
