Mentor Text Linky 7.14.13

We are linking up with Collaboration Cuties for the Mentor Text Linky.  This week the theme is Math. We have several math texts that we use; both in our own collections and those that the county school we teach for have given us.  This book, The Great Graph Contest, by Loreen Leedy is one that was given to us to use for mini lessons.  We enjoy it a great deal and our kiddos do too!

In this book, the characters make all types of graphs; pie charts, bar graphs, picture graphs, venn diagrams, etc.  The characters are having a contest for the "best graph."  Students are able to see that data is all around us and that organizing data can be fun!

We will be talking about "data" on our very first day of school!  We will be doing a "Gallery Walk" to get to know one another.   For the Gallery Walk, you put questions on large chart paper all around the room.  There are 6 questions in all.  You can write the answer choices on the chart paper under each question header and the students can choose their answer using any type of marker you'd like (stickers, post it notes, their initials, etc).  If you'd like to try this activity with your students, click on the picture below.  Included is 6 "getting to know you" question headers and directions for the activity.  Enjoy!

The Gallery Walk is a part of our Back to School packet, O"fish"ally Back to School, which contains over 30 activities to start your year!

Have a great Sunday!

  1. This book looks great, and so does your unit! I will have to check out the book from the library to see if it would "fit" my fourth graders-I'm thinking it might be a fun way for me to review the graphs they already know. :)
