Mentor Text 4.13.14

Good Morning!  We are linking up with Collaboration Cuties for their Mentor Text linky.  This week the theme is Science.  The book we are sharing is The Great Kapok Tree.  Have you ever read it?  If not, it is a must read.  The Great Kapok Tree is about a man that is chopping down a kapok tree.  While taking a break all of the animals and even a child speak to him about the importance of trees and protecting them.  Once he awakes he picks up his ax, fortunately setting it down again and walking off.  The illustrations are beautiful and the message is very clear.  This book is a perfect read with Earth Day coming up!

Using the worksheet below students decide if the man should continue to chop down the tree or not and reasons to support their choice.  If you'd like a free copy, click here!

If you're looking for more Earth Day fun, check out our What a Wonderful World class book!  It's one of our favorite activities during the year!

  1. I love this book! When I taught third grade we did a readers theater with it and the kids were adorable as they tried to sound like each character! Beautiful book with a beautiful message! Thanks for linking up!
