Mentor Text 4.614

Good Morning!  We are linking up with Collaboration Cuties for their Mentor Text linky.  This week the theme is Language Arts.  We are sharing a book by one of our favorite authors, Eve Bunting.  The Wednesday Surprise is a sweet story about a young girl who spends time with her grandmother every Wednesday.  They read together each week and have a very special relationship.   Anna wants to plan a really special birthday surprise for her dad.  What will the surprise be?  In the end readers discover that  Anna's grandmother learns to read, which makes for a sweet surprise for Anna's father.  As teachers of primary kids, it's hard not to love a book that encourages the importance and joy of reading!

Right now we are working on the questioning comprehension strategy.  The Wednesday Surprise lends itself to great questions.  We've created several graphic organizers for questioning that can be used with this book or any other book.  If you'd like a FREE copy, click here!

Enjoy your Sunday!

  1. Oh my gosh! You are so right! This week should have been LA!! I totally didn't pay attention that March had 5 Sundays! Yikes! I'm not sure how I'll fix that this month....I'm glad you caught that!

I love Eve Bunting and I have never read this book! What a sweet sounding book! I will definitely have to check it out!! Thanks for linking up!!

  2. Hello! I will have to check out this book!!

I'm not sure if you are familiar with "Aunt Chip and the Triple Creek Dam Affair" by Patricia Polacco. It also sends a message about the importance and the enjoyment of reading... it is about a town where people watch TV all the time and they forget about reading (until a little boy discovers books and brings back the joy of reading). My kiddos love it and it's a great tool for discussing "author's purpose."

    Take care,

  4. I found your blog over at Manic Monday. I love Eve Bunting too but I hadn't read that story. It sounds wonderful! I imagine kids will find it curious that grandma can't read at first and that's a whole new lesson!
    Thanks for sharing!
