Five for Friday 2.28.14

TGIF!!  We can't believe it's March tomorrow…can you?  Here's a peek into our week:

{ONE}
It's the BIG sale!  Head on over to our store to find some great goodies for your class!

While on sale, you may want to check out a few things for March!

Do your kiddos need reminders for positive behavior now that Spring is on it's way?  We know our kiddos will!  Last year we used "Leprechaun on a Classroom Shelf" in our classrooms and boy did it work!!!  WIth this packet a special Leprechaun friend visits your room and encourages kindness and hard work.  The kiddos love finding the special friend each day and all the activities that go with it!   This packet includes a fun journal for students to write in, letter templates, writing activities, awards for students, and much more!

Pictures of our Leprechaun adventures last year!

Don't forget to take a look at our  St. Patrick's Day Math Bags available for
KG, 1st, and 2nd Grades!   Math Bags are definitely one of our best sellers.  If you need easy to set up and student friendly math centers, these will be perfect for you!

{TWO}
As you may remember from other posts, we have teamed up with Amanda and Aylin over at Learning to the Core to have classroom pen pals.  This week our kiddos read their February pen pal cards and as always they LOVED them!  It's been such a fun activity this year!!!

{THREE}
February wouldn't be complete without a President's Day project!!!  We have had a wild winter this year so after several snow days we finally got these done!

{FOUR}
We are finishing up our "ALL ABOUT" writing unit.  The student's enjoyed writing and sharing their "All About Me" booklets.   Love the detailed self portrait in the first picture!

A little while back we blogged about All About books, a fun book to read to introduce them and a freebie to help your kiddos organize their thoughts about an All About topic.  Click here to visit that post and you'll find the freebie below!

{FIVE}
We are still working on shapes as well.  We read a book called When a Line Bends a Shape Begins.  This book has great illustrations that show how simple lines can become interesting shapes and objects.

After reading the book, the kiddos took a simple line and turned it into an interesting shape / object:

Our book to share is a classic!  We love digging out our old Berenstain Bear books!  They always teach a good lesson ;)  For this unit, we like Trouble with Money.

And here you can find it on YouTube!  We love finding story books on YouTube to play during snack time!

FIve for Friday {2.21.14}

http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2014/02/five-for-friday-linky-party-february-21.html
Hello all!  Whew!  What a week!  A full week after a week of snow days is EXHAUSTING!  We're so glad it is FRIDAY!  So this was the week of making up what we missed during the snow days and smooshing in all the things we need to finish this month, but didn't get to start.  Huh, maybe that is why we are so tired?!

{ONE}
We had belated Valentine Celebrations in our classrooms!  On Monday, we had to make our Valentine envelopes to collect cards, pass out cards, and of course, open the cards!!
Our kiddos had a GREAT time using our scavenger hunt sheet with their Valentine's!

{TWO}
We dug into our Balance and Motion science unit!  We've already worked through balance and now we're wrapping up motion.  It's been a speedy unit!
Our kiddos are having fun exploring with their tops.

Here the kiddos are exploring motion by dropping "twirlers" to see how they move on the way down.  Visit our Mentor Text post from Sunday for a fun Balance and Motion FREEBIE!

{THREE}
We made "geo creations" with 3-D shapes.  We asked parents to send in items that were cones, cylinders, and rectangular prisms.  Then the kiddos use them to create.  Our kiddos worked in small teams.  It was so fun to see how they collaborated with each other.  The group below created a rocket.  In the picture, they are creating a graph with the number of each shape they used.
{FOUR}
In reading, we worked on Summarizing.  We started using the summarizing hands (seen in the pic).  We read aloud and then all used the hands to summarize the story.  These hands will go in book boxes next, so we wanted kiddos to be familiar with using them correctly.  Then the kiddos worked on filling out an organizer on their own.  This story, Widget, is SUPER for summarizing!!  It lends itself SO well to the summarizing prompts (someone, wanted, but, so, then).  You can grab the hand template in an older blog post here.

{FIVE}
FREEBIE alert!!  We're part of the FB Free for All this weekend!  Come join us on our FB page to grab our special freebie!
 You can grab an EXCLUSIVE St. Patrick's Version Day Math Bag center.  There is a center for each grade level: K, 1, 2.  And if you already have our St. Pat's Math Bag set...no worries!  This is a NEW center!!

Mentor Text {2.16.14}

http://collaborationcuties.blogspot.com/2014/02/incredible-reptiles-ecosystems-and.html
Good Morning!  Today we're linking up with a text from our current Science unit, Balance and Motion.  In our unit, we focus on using counterweights to balance, using balance to help objects have motion, and observing what kinds of motion objects can have.  We found this gem from Leo Lionni!  Balancing Act is a great read aloud during our balance investigations.  While being read aloud, this text lends itself well to questions and discussion about balance concepts.

Great image to stop and talk about why it isn't balanced...and how it could be balanced.

And another great stopping point...why is this balanced?

 Here are some Balance and Motion task cards that can help lead to more discussion in your classroom about how objects in our world show balance and/or motion!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/First-Grade-Buddies

{TWO}
We had our 100th Day!!!  It took a bit longer this year with our snow days, but we made it.  It's funny to tell them they STILL have to come back to school after the 100th day....so many of our firsties think they're done after day 100. Silly!  We celebrated with LOTS of centers with 100.  Here are some things we did!

{THREE}
We always love seeing these 100th day projects!

{FOUR}
Sarah's class had a Donor's Choose project funded.  Her class got 2 iPod Touches to use in the classroom.  So far, the kiddos have had fun doing some QR code activities.  Our good buddies Amanda and Aylin over at Learning to the Core have some great QR activities...and several are FREE!  Sarah's class has used this one so far:

Click the pic to grab it for FREE from Amanda's store!
They also loved taking pictures of some of the things they created during the 100th day!

{FIVE}

We don't have any pics to share from our Valentine's fun because we've been out with snow days for the past 3 days!!  So our Valentine's Day is looking a bit more white than red this year!  We'll be having a belated Valentine's celebration on Monday!  Hope you have a very *sweet* weekend!
