Apples and Fall

Through September, we teach main idea and details.  We pull in the fall theme to our lessons.  Scroll along to see several mini lesson ideas and grab some free resources you can use for a fall theme in your own classroom!

Welcome Fall!
Grab it on Amazon (affiliate link)

This fall book is great to kick off Main Idea!  We talk about how on non fiction books, the Main Idea is often closely related to the title.  That made it easy to identify the Main Idea of this Fall book!  As the kiddos listened, they were collecting ideas to fill in their puzzle pieces.  This is a great activity for all learners: you can have them just draw a picture or they can write or do both!  You can grab the puzzle sheet free below!

Apples!

Here we get crafty with our Apple facts!
Main Idea with Apples
And of course, we add in a little fun with Johnny Appleseed!  We LOVE using stickies to easily get input from all kiddos! This lesson with Johnny Appleseed supports our learning objective of main idea and details.

Here we are continuing Main Idea with Supporting Details.  We use the apple books and have kiddos focus on the Seasons of an Apple tree as their topic.

After we complete the chart together as a class, students complete their own task sheet with Main Idea and Details.  We use a different Apple themed book.

Seasons of an Apple Tree
After reading several books about the seasons of an apple tree and discussing supporting details that tell how an apple tree changes through the season, we make these flip books!  We love them because students get some creative time to draw and also we squeeze in some writing!  The Apple Pie Tree book is our very favorite to share when we talking about the seasons of an apple pie tree!

Apple Tasting

Now, the yummy stuff!  Apple tasting day!  We give the kiddos an assortment of apple goodies to try out and record their feelings.  Here we're having apple slices, apple sauce, apple juice, and an apple bar.  You can grab the recording sheet for free!

Paid Resources
Here are additional resources to add some more fall fun into your classroom!  Click the pictures to visit our TpT store.

We don't have much time in our curriculum to spend on holiday/seasonal themed activities, so we've tried to create some seasonal materials using the same skills from our curriculum.  That's why lots of our work with Apples has students identifying the Main Idea and Supporting Details.

For fall, we created task sheets modeled after our well loved Print a Standard sheets.  We wanted these pages to be easy to use if you have a tight schedule/curriculum.  There are math and literacy dice games to add into center rotation, as well as reading passages and writing prompts that can be used for small group and guided reading.
